Since the time of the Jewish War, when Sepphoris remained pacifist [according to Josephus], the city had an unusual relationship with Rome [Sepphoris was also called Irenopolis, or city of peace]. The obverse inscription on the four coin types struck at Sepphoris under Trajan are remarkable for their and their reverse designs. The inscription, which states that Trajan the emperor gave [TPAIANOΣ AYTOKPATΩΡ Ε∆ΩΚΕΝ] is unique and does not appear elsewhere on coins.
What did Trajan give to the people of Sepphoris? Perhaps it was the right to mint a series of coins that did not have traditional provincial reverses with pagan gods and temples, since this series of coins carried only neutral images on their reverses-wreath, palm tree, winged caduceus, and ears of grain. TPAIANOΣ AYTOKPATΩΡ Ε∆ΩΚΕΝ: Trajan the emperor gave / ΣΕΠΦΩΡΗΝΩΝ: Of the people of Sepphoris.
